Remedi: Improving Medication Adherence with the Elderly

by Paul Nini on Wednesday, July 28, 2010 in Features

Problem:
Remembering to take medication on time and in the correct dosage can be difficult for the elderly, who often struggle with failing eyesight and/or hearing, as well as certain memory problems. Many elderly also suffer from chronic conditions that require a strict course of treatment. Failure to follow treatment plans can lead to medical complications, unnecessary hospital visits, and poor quality of life. Existing products meant to address this issue have not been designed with human interaction for the elderly in mind.

Objective:
To create a system that combines a touch-screen reminder device for patients with a web-based tracking application for caregivers. Screens used by patients employ large, easy to read messages and a simple system of interaction to provide customized reminders. The web system for caregivers provides a running list of treatments, and alerts medical staff to any issues with patient care.
