Digital Sustainability
It’s easier to think about being sustainable on paper or with products, but where do we find the answers and tools to be more sustainable in an ever increasingly digital world? What steps can we take to ensure that even our websites are more sustainable – do they not take energy to power? Are green hosts for real? Are there practices for design and development of online or digital projects that can reduce the power consumption or overall environmental impact? Let’s discuss.

I use supergreenhosting.com and trust that when the company says it is 100% carbon neutral, they are. I really don’t think there is much greenwashing in web hosting (as opposed to other consumer goods). More important than green web hosting, though, is green energy. My home office is 100% green energy, and I would love [...]

Also, Don Carli’s White paper: Print vs. Digital Media: False Dilemmas and [...]

Great question Gage. I often wonder about a lot of these so-called green web hosting companies as well. One company that brings an effective component to your website is CO2Stats.com. It’s a web badge that calculates your website’s environmental footprint and finds ways to make your site more energy-efficient, automatically purchases renewable energy to make [...]

There seems to be a lot of information out there about how to reduce your negative impact with print design and product design, but does anyone out there know of any resources pointing toward better ways of designing for the digital world? Are there ways to make a website or digital tool less energy hungry?

I would love to know what everything thinks about “Green Hosting”. There seems to be a lot of green washing out there, and maybe some legitimate resources, but at this point I haven’t heard much from any credible source. Do any of you use green hosting or know anything about what difference it makes or [...]
