Terry is the Head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. She was a founding partner/creative director in the San Francisco office of MetaDesign, an international design firm with offices in London, Berlin and Zurich. She received her MFA from the Allegemeine Kunstgewerbeschule, Basel, Switzerland and since 1986 has taught design at the University level. Terry has served on the faculty of Otis Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California College of Arts and Crafts and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee, Scotland and has lectured and taught at Art Center College of Design, RISD, Arizona Statue University, North Carolina State University and Bozen Bolano, Italy, among others.

In 2003 Terry moved to the UK to do a second masters degree in Holistic Science at Schumacher College, UK, an international center for environmental studies. After finishing her degree, she joined the faculty and taught design thinking to masters students from disciplines such as science, environmental studies, biology, anthropology and the arts. She is currently a PhD researcher in the Centre for the Study of Natural Design at The University of Dundee, Scotland where her research explores how principles from living systems can inform a more appropriate and responsible design process. She currently lives in Pittsburgh with her husband Gideon Kossoff, a social ecologist.
